What is the Common Conditions Service?
The Common Conditions Service is a clinical consultation service delivered by trained pharmacists under nationally approved protocols set out by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Department of Health. It enables pharmacists to:
Assess your symptoms professionally
Provide expert self-care advice
Recommend or supply appropriate treatments
Prescribe certain prescription-only medicines where clinically suitable
Refer you back to your GP or other healthcare provider if further care is needed
This service supports access to healthcare closer to home, helping ensure GP appointments remain available for more complex health needs.
Conditions We Can Help With
At Skin1 Pharmacy, we can assess and treat the following common minor conditions through the Common Conditions Service (where clinically appropriate):
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Cold sores
- Conjunctivitis
- Impetigo
- Oral thrush
- Shingles
- Uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Vulvovaginal thrush
These conditions are often self-limiting but can still benefit from clinical assessment and treatment, especially when medicines - including prescription-only medicines - may be required.
What to Expect from Your Consultation
When you access the Common Conditions Service at Skin1 Pharmacy:
You’ll have a confidential consultation in our private consultation area
Our pharmacist will review your symptoms and determine if this service is appropriate for you
You’ll receive clear guidance on treatment options, including self-care, over-the-counter products, or prescription medicines if required
If your condition is outside the scope of the service or needs further care, we’ll explain the next steps, including GP referral if necessary
We always prioritise your privacy, safety and well-being throughout the process.
Fees and Eligibility
This is a fee-paying service and the consultation fee will be explained before your consultation begins. If a medicine is supplied that is covered under a government scheme - such as the Drugs Payment Scheme or Medical Card Scheme - you’ll pay the appropriate charge based on your eligibility.
Please note:
The consultation fee is payable regardless of your eligibility for state schemes
Not all conditions or individuals will be suitable for the service — our pharmacist will assess this during your consultation
Prescription medicines supplied under the service may be covered by relevant community drug schemes
